Martyn and Katha have taken in Mo, a young student, as a lodger. She seems to be helping to distract them from their worries about conceiving a child but she creates new tensions in her own right.

Mo has discovered she is pregnant and has agreed with Martyn and Katha that they will adopt the child. Now that the prospect of becoming a father is real, Martyn becomes dangerously obsessed with the baby.

Mo has decided to keep her baby and Katha has to tell Martyn. Their one chance for happiness seems to have escaped them and she is afraid that he will fall apart.
