He finds evidence that the withdrawal was a decision that suggests inside knowledge of rebel movements. Several commanders begin shifting their support toward Laurent, believing his controlled approach is the only way to prevent further losses. Étienne realizes that the rebellion is being watched by the Empire and shaped from within by unseen influence.

9. The First Door Closes

Maximilien discovers proof that rebel information has been sold to imperial officials and studies the documents until he is sure the leak is real. He confronts Laurent and demands an explanation, but Laurent argues that compromise is the only way the rebellion can survive in a collapsing country. Maximilien refuses to accept this and warns that the movement cannot stand if its leaders trade secrets for safety. Étienne listens to their argument and realizes how far the conspiracy has spread through the ranks. He soon breaks down as he understands that people he trusted have been involved for months. Laurent tries to calm him down, but Étienne runs away and leaves the room. Maximilien walks out soon after, knowing the rebellion is now divided from within.

10. So Frightened Men Preserve Order

Imperial troops surround Maximilien during a stormy night as he tries to move his group to higher ground, and the rebel leaders watch from a distance without stepping in. The soldiers close in through the wind and rain while Laurent stands with the others, unable to look at Maximilien as the arrest begins. Maximilien sees that no help is coming and lowers his weapon without speaking. The troops move forward, tie his hands together, and pull him away from the ridge. Laurent turns aside as Maximilien is pushed through the mud toward the waiting transport. The storm grows stronger as the group forms around him. Maximilien is taken away under heavy guard while the rebels remain frozen in place.

11. After the Carriage Left

The rebellion publicly claims Maximilien stepped down willingly for the good of France. Laurent takes control of the movement while imperial officials prepare a secret prison transfer. Étienne watches the empty estate and realizes nothing can be undone anymore.
